Online Therapy for Musicians

How can you benefit from this blend of clinical counselling and music therapy?

I can help you shift the way you are relating to your music, creativity, performance, and yourself. My approach is especially effective therapy for musicians because it invites you to not only think and talk about these different ways of being, but to practice doing that and experience that different way of being in real-time while making music. This is beneficial because it can be applied directly to your musical practice.

  • Feeling disconnected from your creativity

  • Anxiety when practicing

  • A challenging relationship with your main instrument

What happens during an online music therapy for musicians session?

Online Therapy Session

We book a session when you are able to make music in a confidential space. We address what’s bothering you in a talk-music-talk model. First, we talk about the challenge you’re bringing in. Then, we address the challenge in music. I suggest a clear musical experience for you to play where you are. You play, and I listen. For example, this could mean playing a structured improvisation on your main instrument or playing freely for 3 minutes on a secondary instrument.

The purpose of this is to work with your concerns, not to “make aesthetically beautiful music”. No one else will hear this music. We then talk about the music-making and connect it to the concern you brought in.

A bit more about my experience in this field.

I specialize in working with musicians and have the training and experience to support your needs. I hold PhD and Master’s degrees specializing in music, mental health and well-being, and have additional training in counselling psychology. I am a recognized scholar of music therapy improvisation and my original research has been published in international journals.

I have worked successfully with internationally acclaimed classical musicians and with graduate and undergraduate music students. I am familiar with common and not-so-common concerns and I offer you a place to be heard and understood.
